WITTENSTEIN Miniaturized Galaxie® – Compact Gearbox with Large Hollow Shaft and Very High Torsional Rigidity

WITTENSTEIN developed a new gearbox concept with the Miniaturized Galaxie®, with a clear technological advantage over harmonic gearboxes: very high torsional rigidity, a larger hollow shaft diameter, and better behavior compared to harmonic gearboxes.
The gearbox concept is based on a different mechanical principle compared to harmonic drives, and therefore shows mechanical behavior that is not dependent on the service life of the product.

Technological uniqueness compared to harmonic gearboxes:

The Miniaturized Galaxie® gearbox transmits the torque by direct contact of 24 teeth, which touch simultaneously and enable higher torsional rigidity.
In harmonic gearboxes, the torque is transmitted through 2 contact points, which under load create elastic compression of the teeth and cause a slight idle-twist before transmitting the torque.
This allows the Galaxie® gearbox to transmit torque with more teeth and without Backlash.

Advantages of the Galaxie gearbox compared to harmonic gearboxes:

• Very high torsional rigidity, ×3 compared to harmonic gearboxes
• Zero Backlash throughout the life of the gearbox
• Larger hollow shaft diameter – more than 50% compared to harmonic gearboxes
• Higher torque density – more than 40% thanks to more teeth transferring load
• Improved dynamic behavior: the harmonic gearbox is based on elastic deformation, while the Galaxie® behavior is “rigid”, enabling faster response, higher accuracy, and better durability under loads and direction changes
